Community Resources

What We Do

Through the years, our members have actively participated in volunteer community work; we have helped at naturalization classes for immigrants, participated in Red Cross drives and taught first aid, worked at the former Fitzsimmons Army Hospital and the Veteran Hospital in Denver, aided displaced families, donated blood, and helped at the blood bank during WWII.

Our members have assisted the Meals on Wheels program, volunteered at Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton, and served as election judges. Over the years, we have had a number of members who have proudly represented our chapter while they served as chairmen of various committees in the Colorado State Society, NSDAR.

A wonderful custom that the chapter began in 1931 and continued until the mid-1950s was to give a DAR spoon to all first babies of chapter members and make a quilt for each member that became a new bride. Trees were planted at each of the three existing schools in Brighton in 1931.

Commemorative Events

The Fort Vasquez Chapter is happy to join other chapters, the state, and National Society to plan local and regional commemorative events and to join in celebrations that support the goals of the DAR. Several recent or upcoming celebrations or memorializations include the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage, the Anniversary of the Vietnam War, the Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl, 150th Anniversary of Memorial Day, the Anniversary when WWI ended, the Treaty of Versailles, the Anniversary of American’s Creed, Anniversary of D-Day, and Independence Day (annual). We are also especially excited about July 4, 2026, as the United States will mark its 250th anniversary – and we are preparing to celebrate in a big way!

DAR Good Citizens

The DAR Good Citizens Program and Scholarship Contest
This program is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools that are in good standing with their State Boards of Education. United States citizenship is not required.

The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizens must have the qualities of dependability (which includes truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality); service (which includes cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others); leadership (which includes personality, self control, and ability to assume responsibility); and patriotism (which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation) to an outstanding degree.

The Fort Vasquez Chapter invites all high school seniors enrolled at the following Colorado high schools to participate: Brighton, Fort Lupton, Idalia, Liberty, Weld Central, Woodland, and Arickaree. Only one student per school each year may be honored as that school’s candidate for the DAR Good Citizens Award.

Each school’s selection for the DAR Good Citizens Award receives a DAR Good Citizen pin and certificate. That student is then eligible and has the option to enter the scholarship portion of the contest, judged on personal goals, accomplishments and a written essay.

Contests

Junior American Citizens

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution created the Junior American Citizens Committee in 1901 to promote good citizenship and appreciation of American heritage and history and promote practical ideas for service to home, community, school, and country among every school-age child in the United States.

The Junior American Citizen Program (JAC) was formed to promote good citizenship, an appreciation of American history and knowledge of our heritage. The JAC Contest is open to all preschool through 12th grade students in public, private, and parochial schools and in sanctioned home study programs, including those students who may be physically or mentally challenged or in gifted/talented programs. This contest is conducted without regard to race, religion, sex, or national origin. Currently, Fort Vasquez Chapter has three clubs in two schools (Overland Trail Middle School in Brighton and Weld Central High School in Keenesburg) and we always welcome more participation from other area students!
