Our Name
The Fort Vasquez Chapter, NSDAR, is named in memory of Louis Vasquez, a fur trader, who built a fort south of Platteville, Colorado, in 1832.
Our History
On February 1, 1928, Nellie Wilkinson was appointed organizing regent for a new DAR chapter in Brighton. She worked tirelessly to achieve this, and the new Vasquez Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on December 28, 1928. The charter was presented to the chapter on January 4, 1929, by Mrs. Justus R. Friedline, Colorado State Regent at the time. It’s interesting to note that our chapter name, “Fort Vasquez,” was actually voted on by the membership at a later meeting on February 15, 1929.
The first officers, installed at a luncheon at the Blue Parrot Inn in Denver on January 4, 1929, were:

- Marguerite F. Counter, Treasurer
- Maude Lohmann, Recording Secretary
- Bertha Maude Leeper, Corresponding Secretary
- Marjorie Beatty Carr, Historian
- Mary Ione Hunter, Auditor
Other charter members included Sophia Martin Massey, Marian Arlene Carr, Eugena Wilkinson Wittke, Emanuela Ione Rees, and Lucinda Carr Howell Masters.
Our chapter continues to grow and pass on to others the ideals and objectives of the Daughters of the American Revolution – historic preservation, promotion of education, and patriotic endeavor.
Our Committees
Our committees are the base of our chapter’s involvement in our community; giving our members opportunities to serve DAR objectives that are most valuable to each person. We celebrate new members and your enthusiasm in service for these committees!

Our Patriot Ancestors
Listed on this page are the patriot ancestors of the current members of Fort Vasquez Chapter, NSDAR. Revolutionary War patriots include signers of the Declaration of Independence, members of local and state militias, members of the Continental Army or Continental Navy, men and women who rendered other types of aid to the cause of independence, and those taking oaths of loyalty. Other included patriots are foreign soldiers who served the cause of American independence and Spanish soldiers serving in the Presidios at Santa Fe, El Paso, and New Orleans. With a few exceptions, military service began with the Battle of Lexington (April 19, 1775) and ended when the British evacuated New York (November 26, 1783). Patriots may have also provided civil service, conducting public business in the newly formed American states.
